Inauguration of  International Workshop on ''''Revival of Waqf for Socio Economic Development''''
 
Md. Abdul Hamid, H. E. President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh inaugurated a two day long International Workshop on `Revival of Waqf for Socio Economic Development’ on 04 November as Chief Guest at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel Dhaka. Islamic Research and Training Institute of Islamic Development Bank, Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited and Centre for Zakat Management jointly organized the program. Researchers, scholars and experts from Bangladesh, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, KSA, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate the workshop. Local and foreign researchers will present 28 research papers on the workshop.
Fazle Kabir, Governor of Bangladesh Bank addressed the function as Guest of Honor while Dr. Khalifa Mohammed Ali, Senior Economist of Islamic Research and Training Institute addressed as special guest. Presided over by Arastoo Khan, Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, Dr. Kabir Hassan, Professor of New Orleans University, USA presented the theme of the Workshop.
Md. Abdul Hamid, H.E President in his speech as Chief Guest paid deep homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who presented the Bangali nation with a sovereign and independent state. He also remembered the unfading memory of the millions of martyrs who made supreme sacrifices for the cause of our independence. He also said that as a Bangali nation, we feel proud that UNESCO has recently recognized the historic 7 March speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a world documentary heritage delivered at Race Course Maidan in 1971. The speech has been included in the memory of the World International Register, a list of world’s important documentary heritage maintained by UNESCO. He thanked the UNESCO for its noble efforts.
He said, the Government of Bangladesh, following the long-term vision of development, has been pursuing to eradicate poverty and facilitating economic growth by exploiting all the potential resources with a rapid speed. He said that the concept of Islamic financial system that includes Islamic banking, Islamic microfinance, Zakat, Waqf, Sadaqa, Qard Hasana etc are very much linked with the approach of sustainability and welfare aims at ensuring inclusive wellbeing of the society.
He said that we need to extend our hands to pull out the less privileged community from the curse of poverty. He called upon the affluent society to come forward to donate through different methods of Waqf for wellbeing of our disadvantaged community. It will facilitate the government efforts to eradicate poverty ensuring social safety net and achieving SDGs. He called upon more banks and organizations come forward to establish such institutions as part of their responsibilities to the society.
Governor of Bangladesh Bank in his speech said that Cash Waqf management is done by several Islamic Banks in our country. Thousands of depositors have this deposits in Cash Waqf. Now we are concentrating Sustainable development Goals. The rich community and the corporate organizations should concentrate on Charitable activities like Zakat and Waqf. This type of program will accelerate the SDGs.
Arastoo Khan, Chairman of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited in his presidential speech said that the workshop is aligned with the Sustainable development Goal of the Government. He said, Waqf is a powerful Socio Economic endowment that has the ability to eradicate poverty, establish socio economic justice and achieve equitable distribution of resources in a society.
