Md. Altaf Hossain is the Managing Director (Current Charge) and Head of Business, Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC (IBBPLC), one of the largest Islamic bank in South Asia. A distinguished banking professional with more than 35 years of diversified experience, he has built an outstanding career spanning Islamic banking, enterprise development, investment management, risk governance, SME finance, microfinance, and sustainable business growth.

He is widely recognized for his strategic leadership in managing large and complex portfolios, strengthening asset quality, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting Basel-aligned and Shariah-compliant governance frameworks. His extensive experience across banking, development finance, and corporate management has enabled him to contribute significantly to institutional transformation, business expansion, and long-term stakeholder value creation.

Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Hossain served as Additional Managing Director and Head of Operations of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, overseeing the Operations Wing, Development Wing, Information & Communication Technology Wing, Alternative Banking Wing, Risk Management Wing, Financial Administration Division, and the Money Laundering & Terrorist Financing Prevention Division.

Throughout his distinguished career with the Bank, he has successfully held a number of key leadership positions, including Deputy Managing Director (Investment), Chief Risk Officer (CRO), Head of Investment Management Wing, Head of Dhaka Central Zone-the Bank’s largest business zone, Head of Corporate Investment Division-II, and Head of SME Investment Division-II. He played a pioneering role in formulating the Bank’s SME policies and guidelines and served as the SME Focal Person for an extended period. His valuable contributions to the Rural Development Scheme (RDS) and inclusive financing initiatives have also been widely appreciated.

With more than two decades of successful banking leadership at Islami Bank, Mr. Hossain has acquired extensive expertise in Islamic banking, investment management, recovery and asset quality enhancement, foreign exchange operations, international trade finance, risk management, corporate banking, and general banking operations. His strong business acumen, sound judgment, and result-oriented leadership have consistently contributed to the Bank’s growth and resilience. He currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee-I (IC-I) and is a member of the Management Committee (MANCOM) and Asset Liability Committee (ALCO).

Mr. Hossain joined Islami Bank in 2004 as Vice President. Prior to joining the Bank, he spent nearly 15 years in various leadership positions at renowned national and international development organizations and institutions, including BRAC, MIDAS, SEDF, and Grameen Fund. These experiences enriched his expertise in entrepreneurship development, SME promotion, financial inclusion, and sustainable economic development.

A strong believer in continuous learning and professional excellence, he has participated in numerous training programs, workshops, and executive development courses organized by prestigious institutions, including BIBM, BBTA, IFC, FBCCI, DCCI, ICCB, CRISL, and SEDF. He has also attended professional training and study programs in Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and France.

Born in Mathbaria, Pirojpur, Mr. Hossain demonstrated academic excellence throughout his student life. He earned his MBA in Finance from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, in 1988.
